Day of Action Against Agrofuels

6th August

'Since when was deforestation a green solution? Don't be fooled by Agrofoools'

Why Agrofuels?

During this year's Climate Camp, situated near Kingsnorth power station, we will take decentralized, creative direct action against all aspects of the agrofuel industry.

Join us in exposing and obstructing the agrofuel industry on Wednesday 6th August 2008

To protect our climate and our future, help to stop the agrofuel industry now.
The governments of the UK and EU are promoting agrofuels - vast crop monocultures to grow fuel for cars. This is one of the quickest ways of heating the planet. Millions of hectares of precious climate-stabilising ecosystems are being chopped down to make way for crop monocultures for fuel to feed our cars. Industrial agriculture is a major cause of deforestation and climate change, as confirmed by UN reports. There can be no stable climate without forests and other ecosystems!

Food or fuel?
Food prices are soaring at least partly because of agrofuels. According to Jean Ziegler (until recently the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food) there are 12 million more people going hungry now than a year ago due to rising food prices. Agrofuels are a major contributor to this increase.

No to land grabs and human rights abuses for agrofuels
In the global South people are being evicted from their lands to make way for agrofuel plantations. This is often a violent process with deaths and human rights abuses taking place. The Chair of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues estimates that 60 million people (close to the size of the UK population) are at risk of becoming 'biofuel refugees'.

Corporate profits and economic growth madness
Governments' agrofuel policies have been shaped by corporations who aim for quick profits and who want to maintain economic growth in the face of dwindling oil supplies. Agrofuels are yet another quick fix solution that this economic system has to offer; its consequences however, are long lasting...

The time to act is now
The agrofuel industry is still in its infancy - the time to stop it is now, before it has a chance to grow bigger and stronger.

What's the alternative?
We need to support low-energy, planet-preserving, life-affirming alternatives to climate change. We must dramatically reduce fossil fuel use, reduce the need to travel, reduce car use, and stop car companies from pushing gas-guzzling vehicles for profit. The oil shortage that agrofuels would fill should be used to prepare our economy and society for the post oil age. Agrofuels squander this opportunity.

Take action! Resist stupid ideas - so we can have a future!

Agrofuels Working Group

The Agrofuels Working Group aims to:

- provide education at Climate Camp through workshops
- coordinate and support the Day of Action on 6th August

This involves:

  • publicity and media specific to agrofuels
  • information and materials related to agrofuels
  • help with agrofuel workshops during the Climate Camp
  • support for the Day of Action
  • organizing training before the Day of Action against Agrofuels

Wanna get involved? We'd love your ideas and help! Get in touch: agrofuels@climatecamp.org.uk

The Camp has a 20,000 shortfall at present, help if you can, click on the button below to find out how to get it to us.
