London Climate Action
Welcome to London Climate Action
Hi! Welcome to the London neighbourhood page.
The London neighbourhood has returned from the national camp in Edinburgh with lots of new energy and ideas! The next few months will allow us the space to develop as a neighbourhood & dream up amazing actions such as the global day of action for climate just on the 12/10 or the Crude Awakening on 16/10. Now is a great time to come along to our weekly organising meetings if you havn't previously done so! The people putting on the Camp for Climate Action are all volunteers, lots of us learning how to do it as we go along. Everyone is welcome!
DAYS OF ACTION

Global Day of Action for Climate Justice [12/10, Everywhere!]
Change the system, not the climate!
The Latin American network ‘Global Minga’ called for an annual day of action in defence of mother earth on October 12, reclaiming the day that used to be imposed as ‘Columbus Day’. Responding to this call, and the demand for a day of action for ‘system change, not climate change’ made in Copenhagen by global movements, Climate Justice Action is proposing a day of direct action for climate justice on October 12, 2010.
We invite all those who fight for social and ecological justice to organise direct actions targeting climate criminals and false solutions, or creating real alternatives. This is an open callout, we are not picking targets. But it is not a day for marches or petitions: it is time for us to reclaim our power, and take control of our lives and futures.

Crude Awakening, [Saturday 16/10] CENTRAL LONDON
Ten targets
One thousand people
One crude awakening!
Our climate system is rapidly sliding into crisis, as oil companies destroy people’s lives and the environment to keep sucking up their profits.
Oil saturates every aspect of our lives. Oil profits lubricate the financial markets and its sponsorship clings like a bad smell to our cultural institutions. It flows through pipelines to the pumps, airports and factories of our cities.
The failure of the UN COP15 process showed us – if there was ever any doubt – that government and industry can’t tackle climate change. It’s up to us and it’s time to up the ante.
As a movement, our actions against coal and aviation have made a real difference. Now oil’s time is up.
Together, on October 16, let’s give the oil industry a really Crude Awakening.

London Nieghbourhood Post Camp Debrief, [Sun 19/09/10, 10:00 - 17:00]
As ever after a camp, we're going to have a debrief to talk about what worked, what didn't work so well, where next and lots more! This is a really great opportunity to come together after a big event like a camp and hopefully lots of people will make it along. Whether you could make it to Edinburgh this year or not, this is the opportunity to discuss what happened and think about the coming few months.
VENUE: At the moment, we have a possible venue in London Fields (East
London) but ideally we'd love to be more central so if anyone else has links
to a venue that we can be loaned for the day/hired for a small budget, that
would be awesome (pls reply off list rather than to everyone).

How to set up a London Housing Co-op, [Wed 22/09/10, 19:30 - 21:30]
Setting up housing co-ops is one of the most practical and direct things we can do to take more control of our lives and continue the process of building a better world - in the present it gives us supportive and secure places from which to continue activism, means that there's no landlord to frustrate all those energy efficency improvements or permaculture garden dreams, and in the future (when mortgages etc are paid off) provides an even more useful asset.
A group of us are interested in helping to get co-ops started in London and have convened this meeting where people can find out more about what is required and form into groups to actually go out there and do it. I say groupS because in a place as big as London there will probably be people who are interested in starting something in different geographical areas at different timescales or in other different ways - so please don't be put off if you think "nobody wants to live where i want to live" or "i'm interested, but not quite yet"
Come along, and tell all your friends!
