Edinburgh 2010
NEVER MIND THE BANKERS - IT'S THE SYSTEM STUPID!
The Camp for Climate Action has been taking direct action against climate change for four years. But in that time we've addressed the symptoms - coal fired power stations, airport expansion: that sort of thing.
This year promises to be something different. We are heading to Edinburgh to take action against the system itself - the globalised capitalist system that wreaks havoc on eco systems and communities the world over.
Why Edinburgh? Because it's home to the Royal Bank of Scotland's Global HQ. And there are plenty more targets to suit all manner of actions - from high st banks to oil refineries and power stations.
Last year RBS were bailed out with £50 billion of public money. This bank is one of the world's largest investor in oil, gas and coal. From tar sands extraction in Canada to coal infrastructure here in the UK, we're paying to trash our future.
These projects are not just causing catastrophic climate change, but destroying the lives and livelihoods of people across the globe. Meanwhile, we're told there is no money left and we should be braced for decades of public sectors cuts.
Here at South Coast neighbourhood we're sending transport up on Wednesday 18th August (and possibly Friday 20th August). We will all return on Wednesday 25th August.
Come up on the Wednesday and get involved in building the camp and planning actions - all manner of experience and daring welcome - from those who are happy to be arrested to those who want to cook for large numbers.
We also need people to come forward to help us plan and plot and get organised. So even if you can't come to Scotland, it might be that you can help us now (do get in touch if you think you can).
Tickets will cost 30 pounds return for the minibuses. Initially we will be looking to fill a minibus leaving on the Weds 18th Aug and returning on the Weds 25th Aug. Depending on demand we may be able to run other minibuses on other days.
There is a possibility of a Big Lemon coach leaving on Fri 20th if there is sufficient demand (though this might be quite a bit more expensive).
Contact southcoast@climatecamp.org.uk or ring 07732505632 to book a place to travel now. Also please let us know ASAP if you want to come but can't do 18th-25th so we know whether running transport on other days would be viable.
Finally please think about coming to one of our Tuesday meetings at 7.30pm in the Cowley Club, 12 London Rd, Brighton (ring bell). The last two before the camp on Tues 10th Aug and Tues 17th Aug.
Also note that the Site visuals subgroup is running a Creation Lab event on the weekend 14-15th Aug at Pop up Studios in Lewes to make banners etc.
It is possible that we may try to organise some other activities in Lewes on the same weekend such as legal and direct action training.
