Press Release 5th August

For Immediate Release – Tuesday 5th August

Police fail to derail climate camp

After first trying to seize campers' vehicles at five thirty this morning, there was continuous police disruption throughout the day at climate camp.

“Police have already confiscated every single item that could conceivably be used for direct action. The only possible reasons for coming onto site this afternoon were either to try and provoke confrontation or to intimidate people from coming to the camp,” said Terry Graves.

Despite the police intrusions, the camp continued to host a wide range of workshops and activities. Today's speakers included MEP Caroline Lucas and Arthur Scargill.

“It was great to have been visited by Arthur Scargill. While we didn't see eye to eye on everything, the amazing thing about climate camp is that it provides a space for challenging debates like this to happen,” said camper
Jenny Ellis.

Tomorrow a full programme of workshops will educate campers on issues from organic composting to green economics, as the camp momentum continues tobuild.

“The workshops that actually happened today were really interesting. We're looking forward to a stimulating day tomorrow, building up to the day of mass action on Saturday,” she continued.
